What Are Audio Visual Entrainment (AVE) & Cranial-Electro Stimulation (CES)?

My practice is informed by chiropractic, environmental and energetic medicine and comes out of years of searching for answers to my own health issues which neither disease-oriented, symptoms-based allopathic, nor non-conventional practitioners, could holistically address.  I had many questions that nobody could take the time to answer.

In working with me, you become your own health detective using innovative tools. You become your oown doctor ... which in Latin means 'teacher.'  These tools include, but are not limited to, signs and symptoms questionnaires and a variety of tests for genetic variants, organic acids and metabolites, heavy metals, non-metal toxins such as mycotoxins and pesticides, food/mold/additive intolerances, and more.  I am not an advocate of testing for the sake of testing.  I am a guide to choosing tests relevant to your detective work.  These tools compile a data set unique to you.  This work, and it is work, will delight you, as you engage in cutting-edge health science, support your body's innate functionality and take responsibility for your own well-being.

  • Where Do I Practice?

I practice online, via video conferencing using FaceTime, Zoom, Skype, WhatsApp, Viber, or a client's preferred platform.  My clients live in many parts of the world.  The technical requirements for working with me are:  access to the Internet and ability to take receipt of  lab test kits.  In the US, the governments of New York and Maryland prohibit shipment of functional health lab test kits to these states.

Please note, I am a guide to functional health and do not diagnose or treat disease: I educate on how to use nutrition and science to support your body's natural functions. I am not a doctor, medical professional, dietician or nutritionist!

  • What Is Integrative Nutrition?

Joshua Rosenthal of the Institute for Integrative Nutrition created the idea of integrative nutrition, and it embraces these main tenets:

Bio-individuality™: The concept of bio-individuality is that each person has unique food and lifestyle needs. One person’s food is another person’s poison, and that’s why fad diets tend to fail in the long run.

Primary Food™: It’s easy to overlook all of the things that contribute to our sense of nourishment and fulfillment. It’s not just the food we eat, but all of the other factors present in our daily lives. Healthy relationships, a fulfilling career, regular physical activity and a spiritual awareness are essential forms of nourishment. When these “primary foods” are balanced, what you eat becomes secondary.

Integrative Nutrition™ Plate: The Integrative Nutrition Plate emphasizes the importance of local and organic produce, whole grains, high-quality proteins, plant-based fats, and water. It shows you how a plate should appear at mealtime and emphasizes the importance of proportions and portion size. To complete the picture, the plate is surrounded with lifestyle factors that create optimal health: relationship, career, physical activity and spirituality.

  • What is Functional Genomic Analysis?

Functional genomic analysis provides a cutting-edge approach to looking at genetic susceptibilities to developing chronic conditions. Supporting your genetic susceptibilities with nutrition is based on current scientific research. An individual’s genetic susceptibilities, along with evidence of metabolites from organic acid and other testing, can provide the “aha moment” in discovering a missing piece to lifelong health problems. Variants in DNA can impact your ability to make and use different nutrients critical for reducing inflammation, supporting healthy circulation, promoting a strong immunity, supporting emotional health, and proper removal of the toxins we are exposed to, as well as slowing the aging process.  This, among other new science on light, water and energetics, is the future of health.

  • What is Organic Acid Testing?

Organic acids are metabolic byproducts of cellular metabolism and they can be measured from a simple urine sample. This test provides a plethora of information about what is going on in your body. The organic acid biomarkers are metabolic intermediates that are produced in pathways of central energy production, neurotransmitter breakdown, detoxification and intestinal microbial activity.  When specific organic acids are found accumulating they often signal a metabolic insufficiency. These insufficiencies may be related to toxicity, a nutritional deficiency or an inherited enzyme deficit. The test is  complex and requires expertise to analyze.  We gain clarity by combining this test with genetic variant testing and signs and symptoms questionnaires.

  • What is Nutritional Genomics?

Matching diet with an individual’s genetic makeup is transforming the way the public views nutrition as a means of managing health and preventing disease. Researchers like NutriGenetic Research Institute reconcile the diverse properties of dietary factors with current knowledge of genome structure and gene function. What is emerging is a complex system of interactions that make the human genome exquisitely sensitive to our nutritional environment.

  • What is Detoxification?

  • Safe Effective Sauna for Detoxification

Dr. Ben Lynch offers this advice on how to use a sauna safely and effectively. It can seem a bit extreme, but better safe than sorry!

Everyone has unique genetics and biochemistry, and each person will have different thresholds for temperatures and duration, and responses to saunas.  Dr. Ben's advice needs to be taken with that understanding.

There is at least one generality we can go with in preparing to take a sauna:  most everyone is magnesium deficient.  Magnesium comes in many forms (magnesium citrate, magnesium taurate, magnesium glycinate etc).  And it can be taken in many forms:  capsules, liposomal, dermal, or with Epsom Salts.  The organic acid test can give insight into which form will benefit you. I recommend everyone read Dr. Carolyn Dean's book "Magnesium Miracle" and listen to Morley Robbins ("Magnesium Man").  My favorite forms of magnesium are AquaH2O tablets and magnesium L-threonate (also called MagTein).

If you are very ill with pathogenic infection, nutritional- and mineral-deficient, constipated, out-of-shape, and/or chemically-polluted, please use saunas with caution, if at all.

Do not use a sauna if you are dehydrated, pregnant, menstruating, drained (feeling weak), with fever, or have an acute injury.

Do not use a sauna if you have not moved your bowels!

In addition, these people should use caution with saunas: children, diabetics, people on medications or with cardiovascular disease or implants, yin deficiency or yang excess, pitta imbalance.

Use your best judgement if you have other conditions that may be effected by increasing blood flow, oxygenation, temperature, circulation of toxins, and sweating.

If you are ready to sauna, you are in for a real treat.  Here are compelling reasons to sauna, for detoxification, and more:

  • induce hyperthermia

  • increase oxygenation of periphery

  • induce sweating

  • relaxation

  • support detoxifying organs – skin, lungs, liver, kidneys, lymph

  • mobilize solvents and xenobiotics from stored tissues

You will sweat out electrolytes along with "bad stuff" like ammonia, so you want to be prepared.  A few days before using a sauna, consider Dr. Lynch's steps on how to prepare for using a sauna.  He suggests the following:

  • hydrate with electrolytes

  • support the adrenal cortex

  • eat balanced healthy meals

  • ensure proper bowel movements – you must be defecating daily

  • take or use these supplements (or nutritional supplements specifically designed for you ... not all vitamins and minerals are appropriate for everyone!)

    • multi-vitamin

    • multi-mineral

    • phosphatidylcholine

    • liposomal glutathione

    • liposomal vitamin C

  • get restful sleep - in bed by 10 PM – no reading in bed

  • limit strenuous activities – moderate exercise

Once in the sauna, at the first sign of feeling ‘off’, you’re done. Get out of the sauna. Don’t return until the next day. In other words, DON’T PUSH IT.  GET OUT.

  • What Are Audio Visual Entrainment (AVE) & Cranial-Electro Stimulation (CES)

Audio Visual Entrainment is a technique that utilizes pulses of light and sound at specific frequencies to gently and safely guide the brain into various brain wave patterns. By altering your brain wave frequencies, you have the ability to boost your mood, improve sleep patterns, sharpen your mind and increase your level of relaxation.

Cranial-Electro Stimulation is a non-invasive brain stimulation that applies a small pulsed electric current across a person’s head. This small electrical stimulus which is applied laterally across the cranium stimulates endorphins, serotonin and norepinephrine neurotransmitter production.

We use the DAVID Delight Pro by MindAlive, Inc.  Sessions can last between 7 minutes and 80 minutes.  An alpha setting at 10Hz for 30 minutes for relaxation is recommended for first time users.  We will help you select a session based on your goals.

DO NOT use CES if you have a heart pacer; the electrical signals may cause the pacer to malfunction, leading to serious injury or death.

There's lots of talk about "detoxing"!  I want to be clear what it means in my functional health practice.

A one-time juice fast is a wonderful cleansing break for the body, but it is not detoxification.

Detoxification is a natural biochemical process designed to rid the body of by-products of burning food (metabolic processes) and to rid it of foreign elements like heavy metals, pathogens, pesticides (and more) that block those pathways, especially in the liver.

Detoxification, in this practice, also means ensuring the body has what it needs to keep biochemical and electrical flows moving and balanced, and it means understanding the enzymatic (genetic) variants that may be effecting these processes.

It's important that you repair any damage to your intestinal lining before undertaking a detoxification program, and that you give your body the nutrition it needs to support detoxification.  Autophagy, mTOR, mitophagy ... these are detoxification and functional genomic terms that you will learn in working with me!

This site has an excellent explanation of how the liver detoxifies the body through a complex series of chemical reactions using enzymes (genes).

  • What is Functional Health and Wellness?

The therapeutic goal of functional and personalized health is to restore use of mind and body for those suffering from chronic conditions.  Functional health shifts the focus from looking at symptoms of conditions and suppressing them with various medications and/or supplements.  It looks deeper.  It embraces a broader person-centered systems-oriented approach to restoring health — an approach that considers the whole person and addresses the underlying or root causes of conditions to allow the body to heal naturally.  Functional health brings together five pillars of health often overlooked by conventional medicine, and yet critical to creating a vibrant and fulfilling life:  nutritional and metabolic biochemistry, anatomical structure, the electro-magnetic energy of the human biofield, mindfulness and autonomic nervous system balance, the microbiome, and genetics.
